Pollarding is a pruning technique that is widely used in city street tree. The entire crown of a tree is removed to leave only the main trunk system. The resulting regrowth promotes a dense head of foliage. This technique is species specific not all tree species respond well to pollarding. Willow, Limes and Poplar are capable of such dramatic pruning.

Once initiated, a pollard should be maintained by cutting the new branches on a cyclical basis.
